Greater Than 21 Weeks' Pregnant
If you have not had prenatal genetic screening and you are more than 21 weeks of pregnancy, your only option for screening is Non-invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT). NIPT involves a blood test, and is OHIP-funded in certain situations (e.g. when there is a higher chance for the baby to have trisomy 21 or trisomy 18). You can choose to pay for NIPT if the test is not OHIP-funded in your situation.
Regardless of your prenatal genetic screening decisions, you can have a detailed anatomy ultrasound. The ultrasound is ideally done between 18 and 22 weeks' gestation and will look at the growth and structural development of the baby (e.g. checking the structure of the baby's heart). The ultrasound can be done past this time window. However, all of the different parts of the baby may become more difficult to examine as the baby grows.
