Fetal RHD Screening – Results & Next Steps

Fetal RHD Screening (for RhD negative pregnancies)

Fetal RHD screening uses a blood sample from you to predict your baby’s RhD blood type. Results help determine whether you need RhD Immune Globulin (RhIG) during pregnancy.

Baby is RhD Positive

What it means:
Your baby is predicted to be RhD positive.

Next steps:
A healthcare provider will recommend RhIG to prevent complications in future pregnancies.
You will be offered RhIG:

    • At 28 weeks of pregnancy
    • After delivery
    • After any event where blood mixing may occur (such as bleeding, certain procedures, or trauma)

Baby is RhD Negative

What it means:
Your baby is predicted to be RhD negative, the same as you.

Next steps:
You do not need RhIG during pregnancy or after delivery, and you can continue with routine prenatal care.

Inconclusive or No Result

What it means:
The test was unable to provide a result.

Next steps:
A healthcare provider may:

    • Ask you to repeat the test, or
    • Recommend RhIG and treat your pregnancy as if your baby is RhD positive
